External Hemorrhoid
Feeling The Burn From An External Hemorrhoid
The external hemorrhoid is an annoying one. It crops up when you least expect it and not only
drives you crazy, causes you both physical and emotional pain. What you have done is irritated the veins at the
anus opening. They become inflamed and swollen from the pressure.
This is when you will begin to feel itchy, pain, and burning around the rectum, especially when
using the bathroom. These are usually very easy to notice and diagnose as they are located on the outside of the
rectum and can be seen without an internal exam. Most people can simply feel them after they get an onset of
symptoms.
The Causes
There are many reasons why you may experience an external
hemorrhoid crop up. The most common is a change in bowel habits. Constipation is when the stool sits too long
in the bowel and too much water is absorbed. This makes it had to evacuate the bowels and causes pressure on the
rectum. This pressure can cause the veins around the anus to swell and make hemorrhoids. The opposite condition,
diarrhea, can also cause external hemorrhoid issues.
This is usually due to continual rectal cleaning, rubbing, and wiping. The irritation causes
inflammation. Other reasons for an outbreak are age, pregnancy, obesity, dehydration, and not enough fiber. All of
these factors can be fixed naturally and will reduce the risk that you will be plagued with hemorrhoids on a
regular basis.
Types Of Treatment
There are several ways you can treat the external hemorrhoid issue. For most people, the problem
lies with reducing swelling, external itching, burning, and pain. Some hemorrhoids do cause bleeding due to the
thinning and cracking of the skin around the veins stretching too much. This should be monitored and if it is too
bad you should see a doctor as soon as possible.
For the less serious, yet highly annoying symptoms, you can use the many over the counter and
home remedies to aid you in relief. Creams, pads, and suppositories will help you to stop the itching and burning
on contact. This can be a huge consolation as the external symptoms can be quite maddening and embarrassing.
Once the medication has been applied for a few moments you will also notice the tissue will
slowly shrink. This means that the inflammation has gone down and make sitting more comfortable. Other treatments
include special bathing techniques such as sitz baths, air doughnut for sitting, modifying your diet, and reducing
the pressure on the rectal area.
Prevention Measures
While sometimes there is no way to control when you will get an external hemorrhoid crop up,
there are some things you can do to keep it from being an everyday problem. If you have known bowel issues you will
want to see your doctor to get them under control. This will keep hemorrhoids down to a minimum for you. Try not to
sit or stand too much and rotate your position often throughout the day. Also be sure to drink plenty of water and
eat a high fiber diet.
